1. How to set up DCOM connection?

If you have Windows 95 installed, then you need to install DCOM before (it is not supplied with Windows 95). You can download installation file in the Download section.

In order to use DCOM it must be enabled on your computers. By default, DCOM is enabled, but if it is not then you need to do it manually.

Note: You can change all DCOM settings using the configuration utility dcomcnfg.exe or dcm95cfg.exe (for Windows 95). This utility is supplied with DCOM. To run this utility you just need to type dcomcnfg.exe (or dcm95cfg.exe) in command line (Windows Start menu).

To enable DCOM you need to check "Enable using DCOM on this computer" checkbox.

You need to start at least once UniTest System server program (Monitor). Then you can set up permissions to access Monitor for other users. To set up permissions you need to start the DCOM configuration utility, choose "UniTest System Monitor" application on "Applications" tab, then "Security" tab. For more information on how to set permissions press F1 in DCOM configuration utility.

After all, start every client (Test) and in dialog box select computer, where server (Monitor) is placed.

Note: If you have some problems using DCOM on Windows 95, then it is better to use the Socket connection. That is all because of platform differences (DCOM is designed for Windows NT platform).

2. What is DCOM? What is Socket?

The DCOM and the Socket connections are the ways computers in network connect to each other.

The Socket connection is one of the oldest and, anyway, most frequently used connection. For example, Internet is based on Socket connection. Socket is platform independent connection standard (almost every platform supports Sockets).

The DCOM connection is the secure connection for Windows based computers (especially if Windows NT/2000/XP or higher). However, DCOM can be based on the Socket connection too (because it is a standard). For now, DCOM can use almost any connection type as its base (not only Sockets).

3. What is the syntax of the filter language in Report?

Filter language is very simple and understandable micro language. The syntax is:

... LogicOp (([Field] Relation Expression) LogicOp (([Field] Relation Expression) LogicOp ...) LogicOp ([Field] Relation Expression) ...

LogicOp - "and" (logical and), or "or" (logical or).
Relation - relation between field and expression: ">", "<", "=", "<>", ">=", "<=".
Expression - constant expression (text, number, date). Dates and texts must be typed within accent symbols ('), and numbers - not. For example: 'Text', 234, '01.01.01'.
Field - result database field name:

  1. TestDate - testing date (date)
  2. TestSubject - test subject (text)
  3. LastName - last name (text)
  4. FirstName - first name (text)
  5. MiddleName - middle name (text)
  6. Address - address (text)
  7. EduEstablishment - education establishment (text)
  8. Teacher - teacher (text)
  9. UserField1 - user field no 1 (text)
  10. UserField2 - user field no 2 (text)
  11. QuestionsNum - number of questions in the test (number)
  12. RightAnswers - correct answers (number)
  13. MaxPoints - max. points (number)
  14. PointsEarned - points earned (number)
  15. Mark - mark (number)

Filter expression example: "((([TestDate] >= '10.07.01') and ([TestDate] < '20.07.01')) or ([UserField1] = '*')) and ([Mark] > 4)"

However, you have no need to know this simple language. You can filter using filter setup wizard (in Edit menu).

4. I forgot my database password, how can I restore it?

Sorry, but neither you nor other can restore it. It is made for your security.

However, if password is less than 6 characters in length, then it is possible to restore it. However, I cannot help you to do that because it might be not your database.

5. Can I set up time for the test?

Yes, it is one of the first implemented features.

You can set up time for the test in Editor using Description panel (input field "Test time").

6. Why there are only six answers possible in one question?

UniTest System 3.7 or higher already have support for up to 20 questions in every question.

7. What is the difference between DCOM and Socket connections? What is better to use?

DCOM is new, more secure and advanced technology to transfer data between Windows-based computers (Windows NT 4.0 already supports DCOM connection through the Internet).

On the other hand, Sockets are platform independent. If you have Windows 95, there might be some problems with DCOM due to architecture differences (DCOM is developed for Windows NT architecture).

Do you have problems using DCOM on Windows 95? If you do, then it is better to use Sockets. If you do not, then it is better to use DCOM.
